Need a seasonal refresher in your home, but don’t know where to start? Interior designer Farah Merhi says there are simple changes you can make without breaking the bank.
“I personally have loved changing up my home decor to reflect the season. It puts me in a good mood and also allows for a small and quick update in my home,” Merhi says.
She shares four easy steps for a spring refresh in your living room, dining room and kitchen.
Step 1: Pick your color palette and pillows.
“For this spring season I went with a mix of lavender, plum and gray and gold,” Merhi says. The first step is to introduce the new color palette through a few decorative pillows on your sofa and arm chairs. “Pillows are a great way to update the room with your color palette for the season,” she says. “It’s also a way to update your furniture.”
And don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns.
“It’s a great way to add interest in your room,” Merhi says, adding that geometric patterns, bold and rich color palettes are trending this year. Popular hues include emerald green, black, cobalt blue, pink, plum and fuchsia. Gold is also making a comeback. “For years, you’ve been told to stay away from gold, but now you’ll find it incorporated in decor and furniture,” she says. “Gold has become a big trend that I predict is here to stay.”
Step 2: Choose your accent decor.
Switch out a couple pieces on your coffee table and introduce decor that reflects your new color palette, Merhi advises. “In my home, I like to bring in a new vase filled with beautiful fresh or faux florals in the color palette I have chosen for the season,” she says. You can also add a spring-scented candle and decor with floral accents. “I finished off the look by placing two of my storage ottomans in mauve to tie the whole room together,” she says.
Step 3: Freshen your dining room tablescape.
When it comes to the dining room, Merhi recommends creating a beautiful tablescape that makes a statement with fresh flowers and napkins. “I start by styling a centerpiece with fresh florals that tie back to my color palette,” she says. “I then bring out my gold and white dinnerware and style my napkins and napkin rings on top of my dinnerware. I love the layered look! I finish off my tablescape by styling candles in the middle of the table for an intimate setting.”
Step 4: Add vignettes in the kitchen.
Merhi has two areas in the kitchen she updates for the season. One is a vignette on her kitchen island she creates with fresh flowers, scented candles and a cake stand filled with treats. The other is by the kitchen sink: “I find washing dishes to be an unpleasant task, so I style a vignette by my sink which makes the task a bit easier for me,” she says. “My vignette includes a candle, a small flower arrangement and my soap pump styled on top of a cake stand.”
She says she always likes to add “cheerful colors” in the kitchen. Her go-to hues this season? “Plum, lavender or soft pinks mixed with white.”
