In 2012, Armond Rashad, then 22, started working towards a lofty goal: making the city of Detroit healthier. Growing up in Inkster, he watched his grandfather battle diabetes; his struggle inspired Rashad to help others in the city — “widely regarded as one of the most unhealthy cities in the U.S.,” he says — boost their wellness.
A decade later, the former Wayne State University football player is doing just that every day as the managing partner of Jabs Gym in Eastern Market and the founder of Run This Town (RTT), a free fitness program with chapters across Michigan and in Chicago. He’s also a sought-after trainer, holding sessions for everyone from the staff of the Detroit Pistons and Quicken Loans to collegiate and pro athletes. “To summarize it,” he says, “I’ve been committed to fitness and the growth of the city of Detroit for my entire life.”

What are three words you’d use to describe your style?
Sporty, clean, sleek.
What are your favorite local places to shop?
I love to pick custom suits and shirts from Dandy, located inside of Detroit is the New Black.
What’s one item you can’t leave home without and why?
I can’t leave home without my Rolex. When I’m not wearing a Rolex, I’m reppin’ Detroit with my Shinola on. A nice timepiece serves as a great conversation starter.
What’s the most cherished item in your wardrobe?
My mid-length Burberry trench coat. It’s classic and timeless.
What’s your ‘must-have’ piece for 2022?
It has to be the high-fashion gym shoe. Some of my favorites that I own are made by Christian Louboutin.
Any “fashion resolutions” for this year?
I’m really striving to wear my fashion-forward jeans in 2022. I’ve never been much of a “jean-person.”
For people who have resolved to get healthier in 2022, where do you recommend they start?
It’s not about New Year’s resolutions, it’s more about lifestyle solutions. There are three simple things you should do every day: get in 10,000 steps, drink a gallon of water, and try to sweat for 30 minutes.
