Spring Style with the Big Fashion Guy

April 5, 2017

Make a bold statement with accessories.

By Michael-Anthony Spearman

I love fashion. I started my blog — The Big Fashion Guy — in 2015 because I felt there was a lack of representation in the big and tall community.

Being a rather big guy myself, I wanted to provide gentlemen of size better fashion and style inspiration. Since starting my blog, I’ve had the opportunity to work with major companies like Casual Male XL, ASOS and Happy Socks as well as smaller and more local companies to bring “big guy fashion” to my followers.

For me, accessories bring an outfit to life.

My advice? This spring, don’t be afraid to bring a little excitement to your look with a few trendy accessories. Here are my top picks for 2017 that will be sure to bring your outfits alive, whether you dress for business, work or play.

For the past few seasons, men’s jewelry is becoming more and more popular. This year, kick it up a notch with leather or bold cuff bracelets, unique cufflinks, statement rings and, let’s not forget, the cool watch game.

A few of my favorites are the Brathwait classic slim wrist watch, a leather strap bracelet with anchor detail and wooden cufflinks.

Brathwait classic slim wrist watch, $229, Jord Wooden Watch, $395, Keil James Patrick mini Brooks Brothers wrap bracelet, $48 and Fossil anchor bracelet, $48.

Funky and cool lapel pins are very much in for the spring 2017 season. Rocking a bold and unique lapel pin can take your corporate or business casual look to the next level. This spring, keep a lookout for vintage-inspired pins along with bold metal pieces.

One of my favorite places to find unique lapel pins and other vintage jewelry is at Tooth & Nail Jewelry Oddities at the Rustbelt Market in Ferndale. Thrift on the Ave in Detroit sells a lot of cool men’s accessories by local designer Blue Bowtique.

G and Co Stag Lapel Pin, $10,  Harrison Blake Apparel Dapper Box, $25 / month subscription, Flower lapel pins (assorted colors, price & sizes) from Harrison Blake Apparel.

Sneakers are a must-have. This season, keep it crisp in white classic designs that can transition from day to night smoothly, like a classic pair of Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars or Stan Smith Sneakers by Adidas. You’ll also see more laceless and slip-on styles, making it easy to slide on and be on your way.

If you’re a trendy male on the go, a great backpack, messenger or duffle bag is a must-have staple year-round. This season, I’m loving retro-inspired bags and totes with lots of cargo space in cool and innovative fabrics.

So, gents, it’s time to step up your accessory game. With the addition of just a few key pieces, you can express yourself, add class to your wardrobe and add a bold statement to an otherwise simple look. NS
