When she was just 4 years old, Sophia Washer was bound and determined to take up the violin. Not many toddlers possess such a gift — and not many teens have the passion and talent to write, act and dance, but this young songstress has abundant ability.

By first grade, Sophia was a member of the Livonia Symphony Orchestra and was well on her way to becoming a thespian. Her parents, Brian, an engineer at Ford, and Linda, an attorney and real estate entrepreneur, of Bloomfield Hills, encourage her creativity.

They hired vocal coach Kate Hart of Parson’s Island, and soon the Bloomfield Hills Middle School student evolved into Sofi K. Her debut album Love and Hate is currently in production through Bryce Harding of Berkley and her single, “One Way Ticket,” is streaming on iTunes now.

“The song was kind of an accident to be completely honest,” Sophia shares candidly. “I was having a bad day and I was listening to the trains going by … I wondered what it would be like if I could just get out of here and live my life the way I want — that’s how the song came to be.”

Filled with energy and a genuine zest for living, Sofi K seems to excel at everything she tries — from the forensics team to the lead in the school production of Bye, Bye Birdie, yet she is soulful beyond her 13 years.

She puts 200 percent into whatever she does — but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t had to work for success.

“It’s different than living a normal, average life a kid my age lives,” she says. “I have to sacrifice a lot of things, but I have to sing,” she says.

Sophia says the musicians who have influenced her include Ed Sheeran and Amy Winehouse.

“From a performance aspect, Ed Sheeran inspires me because he can just get up on stage — it’s just him and his guitar — and he just blows people away,” she says. “I love how I feel onstage.”

She says her personal mantra is to “live your life how you want to … and don’t let people tell you what to do. Try your hardest and just be happy.” NS
