Superheros don’t always wear capes — sometimes they wear Valentino shoes, carry a Chanel bag and bring it all together with a Veronica Beard blazer. That’s the look you might see when you spot either Jennifer Granger or Amanda Fisher, two local philanthropists who believe that fashion and philanthropy can be connected for community good.

Granger and Fisher are channeling their shopping-for-good initiative, called Fashion x Philanthropy, into a fashion show alongside Veronica Swanson Beard and Veronica Miele Beard — the co-founders and sister-in-laws behind the coveted clothing brand Veronica Beard — on Oct 23 at Neiman Marcus in the Somerset Collection. The purpose of the show is to raise awareness for The Empowerment Plan, which helps homeless women in Detroit learn key skills and find gainful employment. Veronica Beard is donating 10 percent of the overall sales on Oct. 23rd to The Empowerment Plan, and Neiman Marcus will be awarding $5,000 to the nonprofit as part of the event.

“If you are going to shop, why not use it as a tool to do good?” Granger says. “That was the inspiration for Amanda and I when we first conceptualized Fashion x Philanthropy.” Granger and Fisher first thought of the idea during a blind friend date shortly after Granger moved to Detroit from Sacramento when her husband, Chris Granger, was recruited to be president of Sports and Entertainment for Ilitch Holdings.

At Little Caesars Arena, where Granger and Fisher first met, they discussed their love for fashion and desire to do more in the community. They agreed that many others out there have a similar passion for both.

Which bring us back to the event on Oct. 23.

And on Oct. 23, the duo is launching their initiative with a bang. According to Neiman Marcus regional spokeswoman Lindsey Barile, Veronica Beard’s founders have only chosen two Neiman Marcus stores in the country to host events this fall. “It’s a testament to where Detroit is right now and its resurgence,” Granger adds.

The piece de resistance for the evening will be what every attendee takes home. Instead of a bag with makeup samples, each attendee will be given a small kit, which is the brainchild of Granger’s daughter, that anyone can give to a homeless individual. Included is a pair of socks, toothbrush, toothpaste, bottle of water and granola bar.

Seating is limited. Please reserve your spot by RSVPing to rsvptroy@neimanmarcus.com by Oct. 16.
