Introducing Boswell Hardwick’s new Boswell Millinery collection.
Three decades after he designed his first hat, Boswell Hardwick is once again turning heads.
The artist and SEEN fashion photographer began his millinery career in the 90s, after an LL Cool J-inspired hat he designed sparked a frenzy at a Deee-Lite concert. “I just decided to make a pattern out of a paper grocery bag,” says the 60-year-old Oak Park resident. “People went crazy.”
Hardwick’s seasonal collections were featured in Harper’s Baazar, Mirabella and other magazines. Katie Couric even asked him to design a hat she wore during a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast.
He eventually stopped making hats, but when a friend requested a special creation earlier this year, he came out of retirement. Another friend suggested he enter this year’s Pure Michigan Small Business Accelerator Program — and he ended up being selected among three brands whose products will be featured and available for purchase at Detroit Is the New Black in Detroit through December.
Neiman Marcus in Troy is also throwing a VIP reception for a Boswell Millinery popup from 6-8 p.m. on December 5.
“I’m a hat designer again,” he says. “And it feels great.”
