The 2019 Michigan Fashion Media Summit at the University of Michigan brought together fashion experts and top brands  to discuss the future of fashion and current trends.

The second Michigan Fashion Media Summit was held April 12 at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business The MFMS was created by students looking to form a fashion community at U-M. The MFMS brings brands and experts in the fashion industry together for a day of panels and networking.

Over 400 students, professionals and companies attended this year’s summit. Brands in attendance included Saks Fifth Avenue, Steve Madden and Michael Kors, Talbots, among others.

John Mezzo, vice president of human resources for retail at Michael Kors, Ashley-Brooke Sandall, director of strategic partnerships at Council of Fashion Designers of America, Rachel Pietrangelo, head of Business Development at One Rockwell, and Karen Rosenbach founder and managing partner at KLR Global Search.

Jennifer Powell, an influencer talent manager and brand strategist, was this year’s keynote speaker She discussed her history as a model agent and how she was among the first to bring brands and social media influencers together.

“It just made so much sense to me to cross these platforms,” says Powell, who has worked with influencers such as Sincerely Jules, WeWoreWhat and designer Chiara Ferragni.

In business, her mantra is to always be kind. “All business relationships are based on this and liking the people you work with,” she says.

Panel discussions throughout the day touched on online shopping trends, how social media has changed the landscape for fashion companies and how brands have to evolve with the constantly evolving customer.

Other panelists like Alicia Licht, author of “Leave Your Mark,” shared career advice for those who want to go into the fashion industry.

“I never feel like the job is done,” she said. “I always feel like I need to do more. I am not someone who thinks about my past accomplishments. I’m thinking about what I am doing today, or what I am doing tomorrow.”
