Trend forecaster and global style expert Mariana Keros shares her must-have list for women that includes great Mother’s Day gifts or a little something to treat yourself with this May.
By Mariana Keros
Thinking of Ann–Margret singing “How Lovely to Be a Woman” in “Bye Bye Birdie,” I was inspired by the feminine mystique and female intuition for May’s must-have list. Whether it’s a Mother’s Day gift for the woman in your life or a special treat to celebrate yourself, the following are my faves this month.
1. Statement Earrings
The perfect accessory with all your spring/summer looks, from T-shirts and jeans, to sexy date-night dresses. I love anything celestial so these twilight earrings in featherweight patina metal are a must. $195, My House of Style, 574 N. Old Woodward Ave., Birmingham. 248-594-7776.
2. Social Scene: Siren Hotel
With its much-anticipated opening, The Siren Hotel in Detroit will not disappoint. The moment you walk through its glass doors with stunning art deco handles, you know you’re in a very cool space. Set in the historic Wurlitzer Building, it features Bay City-based roaster Populace Coffee and intimate cocktail lounge Candy Bar, which is decorated in hues of pink. Check out the website thesirenhotel.com to get the complete vibe and experience options. 1509 Broadway St., Detroit. 313-277-4736.
3. Pale Pastel Silk Trench Coat
With pastel palettes a must-have in fashion this spring, I’m craving a fluid duster length lightweight coat. This silk trench coat in the softest whisper of a powder blush color nails it. It’s best worn with a slouchy white tee and distressed denim. Takumi silk trench coat, $355, Paula & Chlo, paulaandchlo.com.
4. Healthy Bronze Glow
There’s nothing like the confidence of a bronzed glow when wearing the skin-revealing fashion of spring and summer. To get a head start on the season, I’ve already made my spray tan appointment. Sol Potion Studio, 33668 Woodward Ave., Birmingham. 248-686-3382.
5. Vintage Menswear
I’m loving all the oversized “borrowed from the boys” blazers, jackets and coats seen on runways and sophisticated street fashion. I recently purchased a WWII Army jacket and London Fog raincoat in the men’s section at Lost and Found Vintage shop in Royal Oak. Ahhhmmaaazzing! 510 S. Washington Ave., Royal Oak. 248-548-6154.
6. Bedtime Stories
2018 is shaping up to be the year of the woman, so what could be more perfect than a bedtime storybook about extraordinary women throughout history? Pick up “Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls,” $35, at Nora. 4240 Cass Ave., Suite 109, Detroit. (Check out noramodern.com and click the About Us tab for a quick spiritual boost.)
7. Magical Music
Enjoy a Sunday afternoon recital — and take your mom for an early Mother’s Day gift — in the Cranbrook House and Gardens Library with internationally acclaimed pianist Logan Skelton on the resident 1929 Steinway concert grand piano and soprano Jennifer Goltz. The recital is at 3 p.m. May 6. Tickets are $30. Advanced registration required. 380 Lone Pine Road, Bloomfield Hills. 248-645-3149.
8. Cat-Eye Sunglasses
A modern take on a classic shape, the oversized cat-eye frame is the newest most sought-after look in sunglasses. Walking into Optik in Birmingham, I was delighted by all the gorgeous options. And completely surprised and impressed with the assortment of vintage, never-worn-before sunglasses and frames for purchase. 247 W. Maple Road, Birmingham. 248-646-6699.
9. Afternoon Delight
I’m a sucker for live music when I’m enjoying a lovely dinner out, or meeting up with friends at the local watering hole. Public House in Ferndale is an American heritage bar now offering live music on its loft balcony 3-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday with $1 off drinks and food specials. (The right reason to start happy hour just a teeny bit earlier.) 241 W. Nine Mile Road, Ferndale. 248-850-7420.
10. Fanny Pack
They’re baaaack! Hands-free ease and chic styling, the new body bag, also known as the fanny pack, is all the rage. I stopped by the always amazing Linda Dresner to scope out the best. Avec le troupe, $610, navy or black leather, at Linda Dresner, 299 W. Maple Road, Birmingham. 248-642-4999.
