From fashion, fragrance and fitness, trend forecaster and global style expert Mariana Keros shares her must-have items for September.
By Mariana Keros
September always seems to signal a change in the air, and I like to attribute it to the anticipation of the fall fashion season and the cycle of new trends it dictates. While runway reports are indicators of the “hot list,” I also like to delve into the new, unique and provocative derived not only from the fashion scene, but how we’re living our lives and what resonates. This month’s list does just that — highlighting fresh style nuances while peppering in some “gotta have it, gotta do it.”
1. Oversized Sweaters
I’m always drawn to clothes that look like you’ve just raided your boyfriend or (husband’s closet, so I’m delighted that oversized sweaters and knits are tops on the list. Whether it’s turtlenecks, cardigans, shawls or coat styles, big and bulky knits look cozy and comfortable. My favorite way to wear them is with long pencil skirts, and short high-heel booties. Kendall + Kylie oversized grandpa cardigan, $295, paulaandchlo.com.
2. SheWolf Pastificio & Bar
I just had dinner at SheWolf in Midtown and can’t say enough about it. Chef Anthony Lombardo’s menu of contemporary Italian cuisine is inspired by the modern metropolis Rome is today. Throw in a glass-enclosed pasta-making room — where they mill their own grain — a touch of modern mixology at the bar, a sophisticated friendly atmosphere and you have the ingredients for a pretty cool evening. 438 Sheldon St., Detroit 48201. 313-315-3992.
3. Nike Training Club App
It’s just like having your own personal trainer. Get fit on your own terms with over 180 free workouts — focusing on strength and endurance to mobility and yoga — for all fitness levels. The app features world-class master trainers in a personalized plan you design. There’s no excuse, just do it! Download for free on iTunes here.
4. Long Skirts and Dresses
The midi and maxi lengths dominated the fall runways, looking fresh and feminine. With so many options to choose from, get in touch with your inner lady-like vibe. Long and lean or full flounce and skirted, you can’t help but feel a little flirty. And who doesn’t like that?! Vince pleated midi skirt, $295, Neiman Marcus Somerset Collection, 2705 W Big Beaver Rd, Troy.
5. Aesop Fragrance
Fragrance is such a personal choice, but you can’t deny it’s the most powerful of the senses, so that “hunt” pays off. Recently, I was turned onto a new scent, Hwyl, from Aesop, the hip Australian apothecary. My friend has a great nose, as they say in the perfume industry, which refers to his ability to discover cool scents, and he nailed it with this one. Described as reminiscent of a Japanese forest, smoky notes descend into subtle spice and dark green earthy accords. Pretty sexy stuff. Hwyl eau de parfum, $125, aesop.com.
6. Tom Wood Rings
Mona Jensen is the Norwegian designer behind Tom Woodn. I’ve fallen in love with the brand’s unisex ring collection. It’s part minimalist and part materialist with a focus on timeless exquisite design and craftsmanship. With men getting more comfortable wearing statement jewelry, and women obsessed with accessories, one simple ring says it all. tomwoodproject.com.
7. Black Leather
There’s been a lot of fashion buzz about a return to the 80s, and that’s where black leather enters the picture. Always a classic choice and interpreted in various silhouettes, it remains a favorite go-to. This season I’m craving a sleek black leather dress, but I’d settle for a distressed worn and weathered motorcycle jacket. Elie Tahari Jacalyn textured leather jacket, $998, Neiman Marcus at Somerset Collection, 2705 W. Big Beaver Road, Troy.
8. Top Handle Bags
Worn on your wrist, or held in your hand, the top handle bag is gaining momentum. Personally, I like the change up, and feel it’s the perfect choice for all the dresses and skirts we’re seeing. Ted Baker crosshatch lady bag, $195, Dolce Moda, 323 East Maple Road, Birmingham.
