SEEN readers know Judge Rosemarie Aquilina as a fabulous home cook who shares delicious recipes from sweet chicken marsala to lemon cheesecake in our monthly SEEN in Rosemarie’s Kitchen series.

But she’s also a published author, who enjoys writing riveting crime novels that take place in Detroit and cities she visits.

The 30th circuit court judge for Ingham County recently gave a book talk for “Triple Cross Killer,” the first novel in a crime series, at The Detroit Writing Room in downtown Detroit. While she’s a busy judge with five kids and two parents who live with her, she shared with the audience that she often finds time to write during lunch breaks or in the middle of the night when an idea strikes.

Many characters stem from her experience as a judge and listening to cases concerning domestic abuse, child abuse and other crimes.

In “Triple Cross Killer,” the main character, Nick, believes he’s a savior for murdering parents or guardians who physically abuse their children. How he finds his victims involves a connection with the U.S. Postal Service and Santa Claus letters. (You’ll have to read the book to find out more.)

The book was published in 2017, before Aquilina presided over the Larry Nassar case with over 150 sexual assault victims. Aquilina told the book talk crowd she’s heard many sexual assault cases as a judge, and the Nassar case was not the first time she’s allowed survivors to speak and share their stories.

Aquilina emphasized that adults need to listen to children, which is a message relayed in her book and the Nassar case.

“If somebody would have listened 30 years ago, that would not have been my case,” she said.

Aquilina is working on another crime novel she said will be released soon.
