Did you know there is a community of modern Quonset huts just outside of downtown Detroit? When we heard about this unique community called True North Detroit, Home SEEN host Cassie Kunze jumped at the chance to tour it with DOBI agent Angela Munaco. This architectural gem is located off Grand River Avenue, just minutes from Corktown, Midtown and Woodbridge.

We toured one of the huts called QuonsetHaus, which is owned by local photographer Jesse David Green and available to rent through Airbnb.

When you walk in the door, you are struck by how warm and inviting the space is. Even on a rainy spring day, the space feels airy and full of light as a result of the large windows on both end walls.

The 850-square-foot Quonset hut includes an open living area, lofted bedroom, single bathroom with walk-in shower and sliding doors opening to a beautiful private outdoor garden and entertaining space. It is a place meant for gathering with friends or curling up with a quiet book and listening to the insanely good record collection on the Shinola turntable.

QuonsetHaus is thoughtfully decorated with furniture and decor from Detroit makers and artists, which balance the more industrial elements of the structure.  The exterior is made from corrugated steel in a half-moon shape with front and back walls made of polycarbonate and fir plywood. The flooring is concrete with radiant in-floor heating, keeping it nice and warm.

True North Quonset Hut Community

True North, a collection of Quonset huts created by Prince Concepts

The Quonset hut community, True North Detroit, was conceived by Philip Kafka, president and founder of Detroit-based real estate development company Prince Concepts. Kafka is dedicated to creating inspired spaces throughout the city that are sensitive to the needs of its residents, which is evident in True North. The community includes 10 live/work units, including a wellness/yoga studio, art gallery and outdoor spaces available for rent.

Kafka says natural light and volume are imperative to having an “inspired” space. When you find yourself in spaces that have these two elements, he says, “you feel like you’re somewhere very generous, very pure, very inspired.”

True North was a winner of the 2017 Progressive Architecture Award given by Architect Magazine and a finalist. Read more about Kafka and his developments in “Creating Inspired Spaces for Detroit’s Core City Residents.”

History of Quonset Huts

Quonset huts are not a new concept. In fact, they were used during World War II by the military. According to Dictionary.com, Quonset huts are “semicylindrical metal shelters having end walls, usually serving as barracks, storage sheds, etc. and were originally developed for the U.S. military forces from the British Nissen hut at Quonset Naval Base in Rhode Island.”

They are lightweight and easy to put up, and can be spotted throughout the U.S. as homes, businesses, theaters and more.
