From splashy wallpaper to appliances in any color of the rainbow, five local experts weigh in on this year’s hottest design trends

Trend: Statement tile
See ya, plain white subway tile! Whether a pop of pattern to perk up a mud-room floor or elongated hexagon tiles for a backsplash, statement tiles provide visual interest and texture. From Moroccan to modern, there’s a tile for every taste.
Trend: Wild wallpaper
Using large, printed wallpapers in small spaces like a foyer, breakfast nook or powder room can completely transform the feeling and mood of the interior. Botanical prints and nature-inspired wallpaper are current but feel timeless, too — and they can change a simple space into a piece of art.
Trend: Bright appliances
In an era of personalization, I encourage clients to think outside the box. To really increase the level of sophistication in your kitchen — and for a real “wow!” — consider custom-colored appliances, like a blue, green, black or even orange range and vent hood. Make it functional but have fun and don’t be afraid to be expressive.
Trend: Ceiling swag
Consider these uplifting options: beautiful coffered ceilings; wallpaper, which can be magical when it’s overhead; or an unexpected color on the ceiling, which is both bold and breathtaking.
Trend: Dressed-down luxury
More and more clients want a pulled-together, luxurious look that’s still comfortable — picture a living room with an oversized mirror in a glamorous frame, and a comfy sofa in a richly colored (but durable) velvet. You can have your “magazine-worthy” home and live in it, too.
