Fashion Week 2017 Global Recap Part 1

From East to West, Fashion Week Takes a New Direction

By Rachel Schostak

Over the past few years, the fashion industry has gone through some major changes in the way designers and major brands show their upcoming seasons collections — what’s known as “Fashion Week.”

It used to be that each season the designers put together elaborate shows to present their upcoming collections to buyers, editors and fashion insiders. These seats are calculated and very hard to come by unless you are one of the above-mentioned or a member of the media.

Through technology, media, industry insiders and, of course, consumers are now connected to the fashion world instantly. And they want the product now. Many designers have tweaked their traditional business models and offer “SEE NOW BUY NOW” pieces from their seasonal shows. Another major movement this season — more designers are showing their collections in Los Angeles.

LA Fashion Week: Collections featuring “SEE NOW BUY NOW”

Rebecca Minkoff is based in NYC so choosing Los Angeles as her show location was a major statement. Her Spring 2017 collection is inspired by the “SoCal” girl, which makes LA the perfect choice. Making the show even more relatable to consumers, she used style influencers and notable fashion bloggers to start the show instead of typical runway models.

Style Notes from her show include whimsical 1970s-inspired silhouettes and fabrics and prints. Also graphic tees and accessories (like she did last season) with relevant statements such as, “LOVE IS LOVE” and “Woman Up.” I’m excited to shop her spring collection.

You can shop the 2017 collection locally at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue in Troy.

California girl herself, Zoe decided to show her current capsule collection on the West Coast for the first time. Staying true to her disco heart core, she created elevated Hollywood glamour pieces that can be worn throughout an entire year and included some timeless designs within the collection.

Throughout her work, cocktail and formal attire, she covers the looks for a Hollywood glam gal and the gal who wants confident, cool feminine style added to her wardrobe.

Design elements include lots of sequin, lame, luster, ruffles, chic tuxedo pieces and, of course, wide suits and jumpsuits that can be worn day to night.

Tommy took over Venice beach and created an uber-cool experience called “Tommyland.” It looked like the fashion world’s version of music festival, Coachella. He presented a very “West Coast cool” collection for Spring 2017 in collaboration with model Gigi Hadid.

The collection, now available online, is young, hip and refreshing for the Hilfiger brand.

Because the collection is available to shop, the style elements are extremely relevant —embroidered and embellished details — patched onto most pieces throughout the collection from bomber jackets, cropped tops to denim, edgy bold leather, short and fringed. I also love the flowy floral print dresses and long maxi skirts. This collection is all about the “California cool girl.”

New York Fashion Week

Overall, the New York catwalks were filled with chic silhouettes and design accents from mixed fabrics, more velvet, glamorous furs, mix-match leathers, bold patterns and graphics, and fierce accessorizing with bold jewelry, not-your-typical handbags, bold belting and funky fashion hats.

Common themes throughout the collections: Americana through quilted coats, denim, gingham prints, power suiting, precision tailoring, box hats and bold belting, Sheering and unique outerwear elements and lots of furs were a common theme among many of the shows.

Like in LA, many of of the collections shown in New York offered  SEE NOW BUY NOW —a true sign of the times.

Fifty years strong as a brand, and this is Ralph Lauren’s second season offering See Now Buy Now. I viewed the collection right off the runway last week at Neiman Marcus (Troy) and think the February collection is full of beautiful, classic pieces that can be worn year around. From perfect layering pieces for fall/winter, vintage leather jackets, and spring sweaters to the type of gowns you could and would take on a safari.

Ralph Lauren continues to do what he does best — design timeless pieces for the American woman.

One of my favorites. Nothing surprising with this show, Zadig Et Voltaire is known for their edgy head-to-toe outfits for him and her.

Their collection for fall/winter 2017 is on point with their brand aesthetic. Select items are available to shop now as well, from statement sweaters, geometric mixed patterns and prints, lots of cool knits, lots of layering, edgy outerwear and athleisure pieces for men and women.

This brand is all about celebrating the confident, refined, Bohemian romantic. Their fall 2017 collection is perfect. Each piece is beautiful and can be worn in versatile ways. The full collection tells a fashion story of a modern Bohemian romantic with elegant cool style. Design elements include lots of ruffles, high necklines, subtle floral prints, blush velvet pink rose hues and lots of layered love.

Style notes from her collection are all about suiting and power dressing for the modern feminine woman. It makes sense to call it “grown up chic” — with simple silhouettes pulling together menswear elements with very feminine fabrics and accessories (i.e. – chiffons and long leather gloves).

Jacobs never disappoints. He took street style fashion to a new level. Art imitates life is the experience he created. His collection is simplistic and pure in representing our current culture mixed with 1970s influences. Lots of mini skirts, platform shoes, amazing fur and sheering coats, velvets — and I can’t get over the hats. I definitely need a cool bucket hat or Fall 2017 — that’s a sure thing.

I was impressed with his overall collection that included a variety of draping and statement-making with accessories such as fur coats, bold belts and lamé. His collection represented a strong female persona with evolving and modern movement in classic silhouettes. This collection, more than ever, seems ageless.
