Imagine if you could wake up tomorrow morning, head to a plastic surgeon’s office, sit comfortably while reading a book during a basic procedure and return home that same afternoon to go about your normal day? And then imagine if your love handles and that stubborn fat around your belly began to simply melt away over the next few weeks, without changing your eating habits or activity level?

Sound like something out of a dream?

CoolSculpting and SculpSure procedures are turning that dream into a reality every day for thousands of men and women. These latest developments in fat reduction treatments are non-invasive, fast, effective and can be done with virtually no downtime.

How does it work?

According to Dr. Mark Berkowitz of Accents Cosmetic Surgery in West Bloomfield and Sterling Heights, we are all born with a certain amount of fat cells, and the only time they increase is during puberty. Post puberty, existing fat cells either enlarge or remain the same in size. Enlarged fat cells translate to extra weight. CoolSculpting and SculpSure permanently remove fat cells, causing a reduction in overall fat. It’s as simple as that.

A Closer Look at CoolSculpting

What is it?

During this procedure, the fat underneath the skin is broken down by freezing it, killing the fat cells affected. The dead cells are then naturally eliminated through the lymphatic system, liver and kidneys over the next eight to 12 weeks.

How long does the procedure take?

The length of the procedure depends on the number of areas being treated. One area, which consists of approximately 5 inches by 8 inches of surface skin, takes about one hour to treat. A typical patient might treat two to four areas in an afternoon.

Is there any discomfort?

Patients may feel slight discomfort similar to cramping or pressure during the first two to three minutes, but the cold acts to numb the area being treated after just a couple of minutes. Patients are typically pain-free for the remainder of the procedure.

Is there any recovery time?

Patients can return to normal activity immediately and can even drive themselves home.

How effective is it?

The end result is a 20-25 percent reduction in fat in the treated area.

Interesting Side Note:

According to Dr. Berkowitz, the idea of freezing fat cells to eliminate them came from doctors who noticed that children sucking on ice pops resulted in one cheek losing fat. After performing studies, it was determined that freezing fat cells kills them off permanently and results in a reduction of fat. Since its inception, over 3 million CoolSculpting treatments have been performed.

A Closer Look at SculpSure

What is it?

SculpSure uses the same basic premise of killing fat cells, but does so by using heat versus cold. A laser is focused directly on the fat underneath the subcutaneous layer of skin and melts the fat. As with CoolSculpting, the dead fat cells are then cleared by your body over the course of several weeks.

How long does the procedure take?

SculpSure takes about half the time of CoolSculpting because this procedure covers a larger area with each treatment. So, in a typical patient treating four areas, (lasting four hours with CoolSculpting), this same area can be treated in about two hours with SculpSure.

Is there any discomfort?

Patients may experience waves of pressure that feel a bit like abdominal crunches. If the intensity becomes uncomfortable, the doctor can adjust for that. Doctors typically offer nitrous oxide as well during this procedure.

Is there any recovery time?

Patients can return to normal activity immediately and can even drive themselves home.

How effective is It?

The end result is a 20- 25 percent reduction in fat in the treated area.

Both procedures are FDA approved and are well studied, and both produce similar results.
