MLS Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
eet Bloomfield Hills resident and oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Timothy Schmakel. A native of nearby Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Schmakel moved to the area to study at Wayne State University and get his medical training at the Detroit Medical Center. Since then, he hasn’t looked back. He currently lives with his wife Gina and their nine-year-old daughter near Cranbrook. They also have an older daughter living and working in New Orleans.
Dr. Schmakel knew at an early age what career path he wanted to pursue. “In grade school, I did a project that involved dentistry and oral surgery. I won the school competition and went on to place in the statewide competition at the University of Toledo.”
He worked as a dentist and a pharmacist before settling into his career as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. His practice is located on Telegraph Road near 13 Mile in Bingham Farms, and he is on staff at Beaumont and several other area hospitals.
Industry changes: The biggest change I see in my field is the advent of virtual surgical planning. This technique is based on a CAT scan model that
allows doctors to predict how surgeries will be done and is an essential tool in planning surgical techniques for the movement of bone and soft tissue.
Professionally speaking: I found my niche in life and I love what I do. I was lucky to have great mentors that I looked up to. I try to emulate their style in my own practice.
Proud career accomplishment: The high point for me was the moment I realized my goal of becoming a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon. I was ecstatic and felt a rush of emotions: relief, pride and a sense of accomplishment. It felt great to achieve the goal that I had trained and worked so hard for.
Career thoughts: I try to learn something new and improve myself every day. I feel I’ve yet to reach my peak, and that’s something I’m always working and striving for. At the end of the day, if I feel I’ve done something to make myself better, then I know it’s been a successful and rewarding day.
Passion for: Golf in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter! I started golfing when I was in college and first rode a snowmobile about 10 years ago. I immediately got the bug and bought my first snowmobile the next week! Each winter, we enjoy riding around Houghton Lake and the U.P.
Life in Bloomfield Hills: I’ve lived in several states — Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Oklahoma — and I never thought I’d end up in Michigan. I always thought I’d live and practice somewhere down south, but I fell in love with this state. Bloomfield Hills is as nice as any area of the country and now that I’m here, I never plan on leaving.
Favorite place to hang out: It could be anywhere. It doesn’t matter where as long as I am with my family.
My perfect day: On the boat with my family at our cottage up north — after I’ve played a round of golf.
What most people don’t know about me: I’m a shy person. Professionally, I have to be outgoing with my patients but I’m actually a shy guy at heart. NS
