Detroit native Micah Jenkins opens up The Breakfast Loft to blend an upscale dining experience with a family breakfast feel.

Detroit’s newest brunch spot is planning to take on the city by storm. The Breakfast Loft opened its doors for the grand opening on Sunday.
“I want guests to feel at home but still have a special experience,” says Micah Jenkins, the 24-year-old owner of The Breakfast Loft on Franklin Street in Rivertown.
Jenkins was born and raised in Detroit. “Detroit is in my blood and I grew up going to breakfast with my grandparents every week,” she says, explaining she frequented restaurants like the Clique Restaurant, Coney Islands around Detroit and Steve’s Soul Food. “I am very connected to nostalgic memories. I am obsessed with comradery of the people of Detroit.”
After receiving her degree in advertising and marketing from Michigan State University, Jenkins started her own branding and marketing company. She spent time in Los Angeles and took note of the brunch scene there. When she came back to Detroit, she wanted that same “bright and live brunch culture” to be a part of the resurgence of the city.
Over years of breakfast outings, the Jenkins family bonded with Steve Radden, owner of Steve’s Soul Food on Franklin Street. Jenkins reached out to him about the services she offered with her company, and they began to exchange ideas. During that time Radden became Jenkins’ mentor, and The Breakfast Loft was born.
The rustic, exposed brick and the smell of soul food set the tone as you walk into the space formerly known as the Key Lounge. The Breakfast Loft holds up to 125 guests in its main dining area. The patio area outside can accommodate up to 2,500 guests. Reservations are available for private dining on the main floor. The bar serves brunch-inspired cocktails such as rosé sangria float filled with raspberry sorbet, beermosas and more.
All meats are freshly prepared and produce is often sourced from Eastern Market. Jenkins says the menu is a “classic American breakfast with an upscale twist.” Guests will enjoy signature items like The Breakfast Loft’s waffle biscuits, sweet potato pancakes, fisherman’s omelet and brunch burger. The menu also has several vegan and vegetarian options such as omelets made with eggs composed of chickpea flour and blueberry oatmeal waffles. There’s also breakfast tacos filled with black beans, onions, cilantro, peppers, eggs and tofu with roasted corn salad.
Jenkins describes the dining experience as an “upscale plate in a comfortable space.” She adds, “I never want to lose sight of who I am and who this community is that surrounds The Breakfast Loft.”
The Breakfast Loft is open to rent for parties and private events. Jenkins is developing monthly and quarterly attractions like day parties, kids brunches and more.
The Breakfast Loft serves breakfast and brunch Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the weekends.
