Profs and Pints presents: “Festivals of the Beyond,” a look at the roots of Halloween and other celebrations of the dead, with Hans Hummer, professor of history at Wayne State University and award-winning teacher of courses on world history and Medieval Europe. Did you ever wish that, like the kids portrayed in Ray Bradbury's The Halloween Tree, you could take a spooky journey through space and time to witness autumnal death rituals? Well, you brave soul, here’s your big chance. Profs and Pints, the innovative social enterprise that built a loyal following in several American cities by staging thrilling talks by college professors, debuts in Metro Detroit with a talk that’s sure to rank as one of your favorite treats of the Halloween season. It is teaming up with Hamtramck’s Planet Ant, a nonprofit theatrical venue focused on enriching lives in its community, to offer the first of what it expects to be many scholarly talks offering a smart nightlife alternative to the area’s residents and visitors. STAHLS’ Power Play for Heroes kicks off with the fifth annual Detroit Red Wings Alumni vs. Team STAHLS’ charity hockey game. Team STAHLS’ will face off against Detroit Red Wings Alumni including four-time Stanley Cup Champion Darren McCarty. All proceeds benefit Michigan Warriors Hockey Program, a program that provides disabled veterans the opportunity to improve their mental health, attain a physically healthy and active lifestyle, and be engaged in the community through hockey. Not only does the program put veterans on the ice to participate in the sport, but it also puts them in a position to give back and volunteer in their community.

The Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) will host its annual Community Investment Breakfast from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 9. This year’s event will be a Virtual Recognition Celebration broadcast LIVE from the MotorCity Casino Hotel’s Sound Board. The SDBA’s Community Investment Breakfast is presented by MotorCity Casino Hotel and will feature FOX 2 Detroit’s Huel Perkins as master of ceremonies. Each year, the networking event attracts more than 300 community and government leaders, entrepreneurs and residents to celebrate the positive contributions made by the SDBA. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Community Investment Breakfast will be broadcast on Zoom and Facebook LIVE and will be FREE for all participants. Advanced registration is required. The event will feature guest speakers, videos and an awards ceremony to honor local business and community leaders who help make Southwest Detroit the vibrant, growing community that it is today.
