Aired Out Quilts! Film Premier

Michigan Science Center 2050 John R Street, Detroit, MI

On August 6, the Michigan Science Center will be partnering with the Live Coal Gallery as we host the premier of their film, Aired Out Quilts! Aired Out Quilts is a project that tells the oral histories of eight residents of the Greater Detroit area. These quilts use colors, textures, and patterns woven together to create intricate scenes that help share the stories of individuals who have lived in neighborhoods that are either distinct, in transition, enduring or on the edge of abandonment. The project began with these eight individuals “airing out” these quilts by hanging them up outside their homes. The project has been an inspiration for many in the community and has since been turned into a documentary by TBOP Media, set to premier at the Michigan Science Center on the 6th! Tickets for this show are available online and at the door, but tickets are limited so it is best to purchase them ahead of time. Tickets are $30 each, with portions of the revenue going directly to the Aired Out Quilts project. The show starts at 6pm, so grab your tickets today and don’t be late!

In June, Cranbrook Art Museum will open three exciting new summer exhibitions, including the debut of the first film by Flint-based musician Tunde Olaniran; an exhibition of works from the acclaimed Mott-Warsh Collection of contemporary art; and the first solo museum exhibition by artist Tyrrell Winston. “This suite of summer exhibitions supports our mission of shining a light on the outsized talent of Michigan-based artists and organizations who are placing Detroit and Flint center stage. With Tunde’s project, we find ourselves working in new ways to build a new kind of artistic experience; with Tyrrell’s residency we understand the inventiveness and importance of place; and with Mott-Warsh we see it all through a global lens,” said Andrew Blauvelt, Director of Cranbrook Art Museum. “All of this work underscores the importance that culture plays in enhancing our communities through artistic practice.” All exhibitions will be open to the public on June 18.
