For James Apfel and Humayra Bobby, date nights look a lot different these days. Instead of hitting the town, the Northville couple — he’s an account executive in the mortgage business and she’s the founder and CEO of natural-skincare line Boubi Skin — hit their own kitchen. “We both love cooking,” says Bobby. “We really enjoy choosing a new recipe, going shopping for all the ingredients, and pairing it with a dessert, of course.” (If they’re not in the mood to cook, they like to order in from San Morello or Grey Ghost; in the warmer months they prefer picnics in the park.) “We like to make it a whole experience,” she adds. “It’s all about making the everyday events special and fun.”
When they’re not playing chefs, the pair — who were married in 2019 — like to watch them on TV. Their quarantine series of choice: “Top Chef” reruns. “We binge watched all the seasons which really inspired us to cook more,” says Bobby, adding that “The Queen’s Gambit” is up next.
So how does one dress for date night in a pandemic? Whether you’re eating at home, parking yourselves on the couch for a movie marathon or stepping out for some socially distanced fun, here are five looks perfect for enjoying each other’s company, wherever you are.
“Nothing ever distracted me from work until the day Humayra came in,” recalls Apfel, who first spotted Bobby when she showed up at his office for an interview in 2015. “I remember hanging up the phone on a client, turning to my cube-mate and saying ‘Watch, I’m going to marry that girl.’”
“I’m Bangladeshi and we have a ton of cultural festivities prior to the wedding,” says Bobby, 27. The events started a week before the formal wedding and included a henna ceremony and Gaye Holud, which is “like a spa treatment” for the soon-to-be newlyweds.
The actual wedding was at Fox Hills Golf Course in Plymouth. Per Bangladeshi tradition, Apfel made his entrance on a decorated white horse and Bobby wore a sari adorned with jewels from India, while the wedding party dressed in Bangladeshi attire. “It was one of the most colorful celebrations,” she says.
When it comes to Valentine’s Day, the couple is looking to do something extra special: “possibly a road trip Up North to get our snowboarding fix in,” says Bobby. “We usually try to [take] a trip to the Rocky Mountains every year, but we love the coziness of Boyne Mountain, too.”
