French fries may have originated in France, but we have certainly perfected them in Detroit.
Mmm mmm. Potatoes deep fried and then seasoned to perfection. Plain or loaded with all the fixings, it doesn’t matter. Today is #NationalFrenchFryDay, so I rounded up 8 types of french fries everyone should try in the metro Detroit area.
1. HopCat

Considered to be one of “America’s 10 Best French Fries” by Food Network Magazine, the aptly named “Crack Fries” are beer battered to perfection with a special seasoning blend. They come regular with a cheesy dipping sauce, “Loaded” with cherry smoked bacon, red onion & pickled jalapeño, smothered in warm cheese sauce, or “Sloppy” with a warm sloppy joe sauce.

2. Estia Greek Street Food

House cut Idaho potatoes made with their “super secret spice” and topped with feta cheese, oregano and extra virgin olive oil. According to one of my favorite food bloggers, @ChowdownDetroit, get the Zesty Feta Sauce & Spicy/Sweet Florina Sauce for dipping.

3. Townhouse
Townhouse french fries are well known around these parts – made with white truffle oil, gremolata and served with rosemary garlic aioli dipping sauce, they always deliver.

4. One Eyed Betty’s

Ok, so the plain old hand cut fries from One Eyed Betty’s are delish, but according to @Motorcitymangia you have to have the Pork Belly Poutine – hand cut french fries smothered in cheese curds, gravy, pork belly confit, & poached egg.

5. Vinsetta Garage

The wait at Vinsetta Garage is a huge downer. But some things are just worth the wait. Hand cut fries topped with chicken tikka masala, house made paneer and chopped scallions. Um, yes please.

6. Calexico Detroit

Carne Fries at Calexico Detroit include: chile-cilantro fries with carne asada, caramelized onions, black beans, guacamole, cheese sauce, pico de gallo and sour cream – Combining my love for french fries with my love for Mexican food.

7. Union Woodshop

Union Woodshop was recently voted best french fries in metro Detroit according to an Mlive poll. (Side note – Union Woodshop and Vinsetta Garage are owned by the same company, so it’s no surprise they are both on the list). They always have classic hand cut french fries, and rotate special versions like “Blackened Fries”, Beef Cheek & Bacon Poutine, Coney Fries, and more.

8. Lafayette Coney Island AND American Coney Island

What list would be complete without the heart-attack inducing chili cheese fries? According to Foursquare lists, Lafayette Coney Island is tops, yet American Coney is right below. I think it’s a safe bet you’ll be satisfied with either one. Just don’t do them both in one day like food blogger @Foxeslovelemons did for her Detroit Coney Dog Challenge or you’ll have a stomach ache for the day. Check out her full review here.
