Nominee’s nameSara Mahmood
SEEN Changemaker CategoryPhilanthropy
Sara has done a lot in the philanthropic space to not only raise awareness about causes but to also generate the funds and support needed to make a difference. For example, she assisted the Ford United Way U.S. salaried campaign to reach $4MM in charitable donations. As an Agent for Change, she helped to lead the project by applying her creative media and marketing skills to set up a campaign that encouraged people to donate their voice (advocacy), time (volunteerism) and capital (donations that were matched by Ford). Outside the realm of corporate social responsibility, she has also led the AdCon Conference, a one day event each year where young creatives (advertising, PR, media, etc.) gather to learn, network, grow and figure out how they can stay local and thrive. Every dollar generated (several hundred thousand to date) from this event has gone right back into supporting this crowd of young local creatives. The generated funds are put into scholarships that the Adcraft Foundation awards. As a former recipient of one of these generous awards during her time as a student, Sara started as a volunteer and rose through the ranks to Chair this event and increase revenue exponentially.
A creative professional with philanthropy, global corporate, integrated marketing, events and communications experience, Sara has successfully strategized and solved complex problems for many people and places across industries. She holds a special place in her heart for corporate social responsibility and supporting non-profits. Sara has been recognized for leading by example and making an impact on the world. The President's Commission on the Status of Women at Wayne State University honored her with their 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award. She was named to the 2017 Crain’s 20 in their 20’s list. Sara was selected by the American Advertising Federation as their 2015 Most Promising Rising Star, was awarded as a 2014 FUTURE by ADCOLOR and served on the organization’s Advisory Board for two consecutive years (2015-2016). She serves on the Board of Directors at the Adcraft Club of Detroit; has served on Adcraft PM’s young professional board; is Chair of the AdCon Career Conference through the Adcraft Foundation.
Sara has a gift for finding unmet needs within the community. She then uses her business savvy to rally people around the causes. She is able to pool resources and ultimately make a difference through the collective impact made by giving. Giving itself takes many forms and Sara understands that and allows her teams and fellow change agents to donate whatever they are able to, whether that is their voice (advocacy), time or financial contribution. She is a giver and rallyer through and through, having devoted her energy and spirit to making education accessible, empowering women and uplifting the voices of Detroiters, allowing for a multifaceted story to be told about the city and its people.
