Please describe why the nominee is a SEEN Changemaker:

In 2019, Maria Dwyer became the Managing Member of the Clark Hill Detroit office - the first women partner to ever hold that distinction. In her role as she guides implementation of the firm’s strategic plan in Detroit, oversees and maintains policies and procedures, manages operations and represents the Detroit office in the community. She set community engagement as a top priority. Maria has helped to implement a charitable program within the office, “12 Months of Giving,” as part of the firm’s Clark Hill Cares initiative, where members of the office hold a month-long fundraiser for a different Detroit nonprofit for 12 months, and host an in-office event which is themed around the fundraiser. She has also incorporated healthy lifestyle changes to the office, such as hosting free yoga classes and a wellness program which encourages employees to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In addition to her activism within the office, Maria has focused her volunteer efforts on the city of Detroit and, as a first step, has joined the Board for The United Way for Southeastern Detroit.

Tell us about the individual’s accomplishments:

Maria is dedicated to enriching the lives of others, not only in her role as Managing Partner of within Clark Hill, but also in the city of Detroit. She spends countless hours collaborating with team members to derive plans of action for office members – from Partners to Legal Secretaries – to promote a more socially interactive, uplifting, and health-driven workplace. She works diligently to develop inclusive programming and is motivated by the employees’ active participation in the programs.

How is he/she impacting the community or the lives of people in Metro Detroit or across the world.

Maria has made a positive impact on the employees of the Clark Hill Detroit office by implementing motivational programs that focus on the employees’ work life balance and physical and mental health. Because of Maria’s drive to make the workplace more inclusive, employees are more engaged in community outreach programs. Maria is focused on education and improving the lives of the children in the Detroit region. She currently chairs a non profit committee to support security upgrades for local schools.
