Please describe why the nominee is a SEEN Changemaker:

A Changemaker is a person who wants to see change in the world and by gathering resources and/or knowledge makes that change happen. David E. Rudolph is that kind of person with our most vulnerable population....the homeless. David is the Founder of “Handlebars for the Homeless” a 15 mile annual bicycle tour of northwest Detroit. The event is a major fundraiser for NSO and provides monetary support for the many programs and services designed to help the homeless population stop living on the streets and become productive citizens. David often says, “We are only as strong as our weakest link, and that is our homeless community.”

Tell us about the individual’s accomplishments:

For the past 8 years, David has led Handlebars for the Homeless fundraiser for NSO. This event grows every year. This year, NSO had over 200 cyclists including 17 teams participate. The 15 mile guided tour is through Sherwood Forest, Boston Edison, Palmer Park, University of Detroit Mercy and Marygrove College. David has led gaining sponsorship support from Daly Merritt Insurance, Plante Moran, AAA of Michigan, MEEMIC, Meijer, Fusco, Shaffer and Pappas Architects & Planners, Absopure, Superior Ambulance, Detroit Bikes, Back Alley Bikes, and Black Young Professionals. In addition, support is given from numerous volunteers, SAG drivers, and a ride support crew. The event has been featured on WDIV Channel 4 and Fox 2 news.

How is he/she impacting the community or the lives of people in Metro Detroit or across the world.

An avid bike rider, David often saw homeless individuals as he rode the streets of Detroit. His vision of creating this event was a result of what he saw. It is estimated that 11,000 people are living in the streets of Detroit. David often says, “We want to end this terrible condition of homelessness across the city.” Handlebars for the Homeless is a mechanism that gathers people and uses resources to raise money to make that happen.
