Candice Simons-- the President & CEO of Brooklyn Outdoor and Owner of j’adore Detroit-- is a leader, entrepreneur, and role model who uses her businesses to make an impact in the metro-Detroit community.
In 2013, the Detroit native recognized an opportunity to fill a gap in the outdoor advertising industry that would to generate revenue by keeping national sales in her home state. Simons founded Brooklyn Outdoor-- a national, out-of-home advertising company that offers a breath of fresh air in an established and often traditional industry. Simons work has contributed to boost the metro-Detroit economy through employing and empowering, connecting small business owners with national brands, and offering local artists large-scale work and the opportunity to be recognized by Fortune 500 companies.
Since the beginning Brooklyn Outdoor, Simons has created an inspired company culture that focuses on helping employees reach their full potential. Female empowerment is at the core of her businesses-- Brooklyn Outdoor is a certified women business enterprise, and it is comprised of a mostly-female team whose dedication and skill in the out-of-home industry has allowed the company to grow more and more each year.
Simons’s love for the city of Detroit inspired her to create j’adore Detroit, a Detroit-focused lifestyle blog as well as an event service. Through curated blog posts about new Detroit businesses and those who create them, the blog has become a respectable outlet to promote and highlight doers in the community. J’adore Detroit has become another platform in which Simons uses her position to connect likeminded people who are focused on improving the metro Detroit area.
Through her event services and space, The j’adore Detroit Loft in Detroit’s Historic Eastern Market, Candice has fostered relationships between people and connections to the city. The space is uniquely decorated with the art of local artists, and often holds events such as networking events, business workshops, panel discussions, and more.
As a lover of Eastern Market with a dedication to the city and outdoor art, Simons is one of the founding sponsors of Murals in the Market-- a public art installation festival that promotes safety of the neighborhood and increases foot-traffic and visual appeal of Eastern Market.
Simons has been recognized for making exceptional strides early on in her career and her accomplishments by outlets such as, Crain’s Detroit Business for their coveted “40 Under 40” award, Crain’s Business Detroit Notable Woman in Marketing, and in DBusiness for their equally as coveted “30 in their Thirties”.
Her most notable award received yet, was being recognized by the Outdoor Advertising Agency of America with the Rising Star Award. She is amongst the first to receive this award and gain recognition by her peers as a person to watch in the industry.
She has received other awards such as The Detroit Young Professionals Vanguard Award, Summit International Marketing and Creative Awards, Stevie Award’s Woman in Business Award, The Michigan Economic Bright Spot Award, 2017 Corp! Magazine’s Diversity Business Leader, 2017 Enterprising Women of the Year, and 2018 Stevie Awards for Women in Business.
Simons has also recently been identified as an impactful mentor to women by the National Association of Women Business Owners when she received the Words of Wisdom award. This award is an acknowledgement of Simons’ consistent efforts in mentorship and motivation of women.
Due to Brooklyn Outdoor’s fun and motivating culture, the company was named one of Ad Age Best Places to Work 2019.
Brooklyn Outdoor was also named one of the 2019 Michigan 50 Companies to Watch by Michigan Celebrates Small Business. This award celebrates entrepreneurs making a difference in the state of Michigan, and it is one of the most prestigious small business awards in the state.
Simons continuously impacts the lives of people throughout Metro-Detroit through her commitment to highlight the city’s most creative and inspiring. She utilizes her position as the President & CEO of Brooklyn Outdoor and owner j’adore Detroit to bridge relationships between local artisans and other movers and shakers in the community, while mentoring and coaching other entrepreneurs.
She provides internships for college students with an interest in marketing and advertising. Through doing so, she provides guidance and encouragement needed to grow in this industry.
She has recently began leading the Dames Collective Detroit chapter, a networking group for female entrepreneurs in metro-Detroit. Simons opened the doors of the Loft at j’adore Detroit to host month discussions that educate, uplift, and connect aspiring female entrepreneurs. She often lends her expertise to speak at, attend, and host events that teach female empowerment, body positivity, and entrepreneurial skills.
Some of Simons’ favorite charities to support financially and via involvement and dedication include the Michigan Women’s Foundation various initiatives including Enough Said, The Empowerment Plan, Alternatives for Girls, Art Road, Hantz Foundation, and City Year.
