2017 Winter Outerwear Trends

January 23, 2017

What’s hot this season.

By Susan Peck

These aren’t your mother’s winter coats, that’s for sure. You need to be bold to carry off the cascade of electro-colored furs, bright wools, puffy volume and clashing prints that are gaining ground now.

So be daring, explore the trends and get ready to try some of the statement silhouettes this season.

Bricker-Tunis Furs in West Bloomfield is featuring on-trend feathered and sheared fox and mink coats in ultra-vibrant and exciting colors and styles. “We have stunning feathered fox coats in electric blue or neon multi-colors, sheared minks that are light but just as warm as regular fur, and popular fur accessories like hats and purses in hot, bold colors,” owner Arthur Bricker said.

“Another favorite is the leather coat trimmed in fur that is reversible and gives you two looks in one, very versatile for any wardrobe.” Bricker-Tunis Furs has been bringing high-quality fur coats from fashion houses in Paris, Milan and Frankfurt to Metro Detroit for 100 years. “We’re still here today because we stay relevant and have fur coats, capes and ponchos that appeal to everyone, including hip and young buyers,” Bricker said. “These aren’t the furs you think of when you remember what your mother or grandmother wore, but it’s exciting to keep up with the new fashion trends.”

The store is currently holding a moving sale, which will end in March.

Cross-over Fashion

Kelly Eccleston, a buyer for Boyne Country Sports in Bloomfield Hills, sees a continuing trend of crossover apparel. Slopes-to-street fashions will have you looking fabulous no matter what you’re doing this winter, she said. “You can wear a designer down jacket out for dinner with a dress or pair it with a fun bold pant and use it for weekend skiing, making it a definite plus for your wardrobe.”

Hot outerwear brands for this season with high-fashion designs for both off-snow and on-snow include Goldbergh, Kjus, J.Lindeberg, Toni Salier, Bogner, Spyder and Descente. Obermeyer also has bright and cheery colors for kids outerwear that is as warm as it is fashionable.

“Metallic fabrics are also very popular this year including silver, gold, bronze or copper in both high shine and matte finishes,” Eccleston said. “We’re showing them mixed with jewelry like zippers, beautiful oversized fur hood trims used in both light- weight and down-insulation styles.”

Transitional Layers

Greenery is the Pantone color of the year for 2017 and outerwear follows suit. The Belstaff jacket from Found Objects in Birmingham is a two-piece olive green luxe nylon jacket with removable fur vest that gives a layered look without bulk. “This jacket transitions to different looks because it can be worn with the fur vest or without, and it does the layering for you,” said Zach Kay, owner of Found Objects.

“For a more casual look, it’s the Freestyle military short insulated jacket in pine — another beautiful color — by SAM,” Kay said. “There are so many great shades of green this season.”

Another must-have this season is winter white. Like the shaved shear poly with embedded sequins by Cartise from Eleganza Boutique in West Bloomfield. “This coat transitions to a perfect pairing with jeans or a cocktail coat and looks fabulous with everything,” said Sue Hickey, owner of the boutique.

“If you already have a favorite winter coat, a brand new accessory is the best way to update your current winter look,” Bricker said. “You can modernize in a minute by finding the right cold-weather accessory.”

Fur hats and hats with fur pom poms, cashmere wrap scarves and knit fur hand warmers in basic black that go with everything all keep the big chill away in the most fashion-forward way. NS
